Follow the Leader

As President’s Day approaches, I am thinking about the power of dreams to lead us and to inspire the leader in each of us.

Words to dream by …

“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”

– John Quincy Adams, 6th President of the United States

Dreamers in the S’News: Happy Birthday Walt!

Mickey Mouse Painting

“If you can dream it, you can do it. Always remember that this whole thing was started with a dream and a mouse.”

–Walt Disney, born Dec. 5, 1901

I love this quote for so many reasons. For starters, it’s inspiring, it’s charming, and it’s amazing to think what can be accomplished when we believe in our dreams. Walt Disney was a dreamer who believed anything was possible.

Another reason I love this quote: For me, too, it all started with a dream and a mouse … or in my case a dream about a mouse. The first dream I remember – the first in a very long line of dreams to follow – was a dream about an inflatable Mickey Mouse doll exploding in the living room of my childhood home. I was about 4 or 5 years old when I reported this first dream … and I’ve been a dreamer ever since.

Thanks, Walt!

Forgotten Dreams

“Where do forgotten dreams go?”

J. Allan Hobson, Dream Life: An Experimental Memoir, pp. 175-176

 Where Do Forgotten Dreams Go?

They sleep in endless seas

Dissolve into the orange gold horizon at dusk

Rise with the sun over distant lands

Wander like toothless men over mountains, following behind burros laden with their heavy packs.

Forgotten dreams shine through the eyes of your long lost ancestors, and the children who were never born.

They peer into a universe you never thought possible.

The writing on the (bathroom) wall

It seems fitting … a disproportionate number of my dreams are set in bathrooms … and in waking life I came upon this quote on the bathroom wall at a Soho restaurant:
“All human beings are also dream beings. Dreaming ties all mankind together.” — Book of Dreams, 1961
